It never ceases to amaze me how quickly time flies when you have children. The years go by so quickly, that when you look back, it all seems to be a blur of laughter, tears, frustration and happiness.
In some ways it feels like it was only yesterday that my sweet boy, Derek, was born. I remember thinking how huge he was at 8 1/2 pounds, and now that little baby has turned into a 45 pound boy that is full of ideas, imagination, laughter, sneakiness (you can never underestimate him), love and a sweet budding testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He is still just as fast, or faster, than he was as a toddler, although - thank goodness - he has stopped running away from me. I still remember how we had to take one of those leashes with the stuffed animal on it every where we went.

He still has his amazing smile, but I think he has improved his ability to use it for his benefit. It is pretty hard to resist, but somehow Kevin and I still manage to tell him no - a lot.

Derek has so many favorite things, one of which is his kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Cole. He just adores her, and was very sad a few weeks ago when he missed school because we went on a trip. He was so worried that she would miss him. And on the few days of Christmas break we have had so far, he has mentioned how much he misses her about a dozen times.
Another of his favorite things are his boots. He loves his boots, and just like his dad as a child, wears them almost every day. We sure were grateful that Children's Place made them again this year, or we would have been in big trouble :).

Derek loves giving us the thumbs up sign when he know he is about to do, or has just done something awesome. My favorite was right before he sang in church with his sister last month, he looked right at me and gave me the double thumbs up to show he was ready :).

I love the sparkle in his eyes when he is happy - which is most of the time. Even when he is upset or angry, it doesn't take too much to get that sparkle back in his eyes and get him smiling. It is all about mentioning the perfect thing to make him forget all other things. (For example, Star Wars, Legend of Zelda, pasta, etc.)

Like I mentioned before, Derek still can be as sneaky as ever. He has his father's teasing spirit, and he loves to try and trick us. This started as a very young child, as I remember him watching his sister carefully at about 6 months old. He would wait for the second she looked away, and then crawl over, steal her toy, and escape as fast as possible.
Now a days, most of his sneakiness is him hiding somewhere in the room, usually under a blanket, and asking us where he is. Usually he prefaces that by telling Kevin and I to close our eyes. It is hilarious. And the sneaky little gleam in his eyes is always present in these endevors.

Derek idolizes his older sister, which can be a blessing and a curse. A blessing when they play for hours together using their wild imaginations, and a curse when Lily wants to be alone, and he decides to bug her until she gives him some attention.
He wants to be like her in many ways, and she has learned that he is watching her, and that she had better be a good example, because he will follow her lead. (Luckily, this is easy for her.) He gets super interested in anything she loves, and wants desperately to be old enough to read the "39 Clues" books, just like her.

Derek can be extremely silly, and he loves to tell jokes. He always ends them with, "You get it?" and then laughs and laughs. He loves to be read to and read on his own - he taught himself how to read this past summer, which totally surprised us. But hey, this kid is always taking us by surprise.
I am reading James and the Giant Peach with him right now, and it sparked a conversation about fiction and nonfiction. He now goes around talking about the things that are "fiction" (monsters, Legend of Zelda, Star Wars, Santa) and things that are "nonfiction" (The Book of Mormon - of which he was very happy to know for sure that it was real).

Derek still loves to cuddle and give Kevin and I hugs and kisses. I hope he never grows out of how quick he is to show affection. He never fails to tell me he loves me. The funniest thing he does though, is when he really wants me to say yes to something. He will get his face super close to mine, give me a kiss and then - with his face still super close to mine, asks for what he wants. It doesn't work, but it is super cute.
I know he is getting bigger, and I know the time will just go faster, and so for right now I am content to have his hand be small enough to fit perfectly in mine.

I love this little man more than I can say, and I am so grateful to have him for a son. Even on the days when he has been completely disobedient, has refused to eat any of his dinner, or just plain won't listen, the day ends with a big hug, him telling me sorry and him wanting to try harder the next day. Happy 6th Birthday Derek!
